Although conceived as a kitchen renovation, our Cobble Hill Co-Op Renovation project is defined by a series of carefully considered architectural interventions that transform the experience of the home. Located within a circa-1900 Brooklyn brownstone, the space presented the irregularities common to historic buildings, including sloping floors and ceilings, uneven casings, and walls that rarely aligned with conventional geometry. Rather than erase these characteristics, the renovation selectively corrected and accommodated them. Portions of the floor and ceiling were rebuilt where necessary, while subtle adjustments throughout the space established a calm visual order.
The project's defining move was the removal of the wall separating the kitchen from the living room, creating a more generous and connected living space. A new peninsula anchors the open plan, with the sink relocated to improve workflow and encourage interaction between the kitchen and adjacent living areas.
Materiality reinforces the client's desire for a warm and inviting interior. Custom cabinetry in warm white tones is paired with soapstone countertops, while a walnut surface on the peninsula introduces warmth and texture. Unlacquered brass hardware adds a richness that will continue to develop with age. The range is framed within the home's original fireplace opening, which was plastered and painted to blend seamlessly with the surrounding millwork. The result is a contemporary kitchen that feels both refined and deeply connected to the architectural character of its historic brownstone setting.
